How do I know when during the spring it’s time to start treating my yard with fertilizer and pre-emergent? Today we want to go over that.

Timing is key

When it comes to treating your lawn the timing of each application is so important. Different applications will only be effective during certain times of the year. For example, if you get pre-emergent down later in the year once weeds have already germinated and are actively growing the pre-emergent will not be very effective obviously. The ideal time is to get those pre-emergent down before germination starts.

When to Apply

Depending on your location the time of year will be a little different. We are in the northeast specifically in Langhorne, PA and typically we start getting this Treatment down in March and April. As soon as ground temps start getting to that 55 degree mark on a regular basis is when you will start to see greening of the lawn and growth coming up. Natures indication that this is happening is when you start to see forsythia blooming into that nice yellow color. That means spring is here and time to get treating if you have not treated already! See RD’s Total Lawn Fertilizer and Weed Control for more information about the entire program here. https://www.rdtotallawn.com/fertilization-weed-control-langhorne-pa/

Pre-emergent barrier

The way the pre-emergent is acts as a barrier on the turf that keeps germination down before it comes up and is visible. So it’s not that it kills anything before it germinations but more it keeps the growth down below the surface where it won’t’ even be visible. Then once the germination starts to grow it hits that barrier and will die off. See image below.

Things to be mindful of

The point of pre-emergent is to control weed BEFORE they germinate. They are much easier to control before they germination and start growing and spreading. Something like a crabgrass which is typically undesirable to have in your lawn is much easier and cost effective to control with a pre-emergent rather than try to control it once it is healthy and growing. Crabgrass can overtake a lawn and take up real estate on your lawn and hurt your fescue, rye, or Kentucky blue grass. One other warning is pre-emergents will also hinder seedling growth of new seed. So if you are planting desirable seeds for a cool season turf it will not be able to germinate and grow with pre-emergent down.  If you wanted help with caring for your lawn you can always reach out to RD’s Total Lawn at 215-688-1622.

In Closing

Spring is a very important time to get your weed control down as well as fertilizer for the lawn. Some of the most important steps of the program come in the first half of the year between March-June for us in the northeast. So timing is critical to set your lawn up for success.
